Apr 6: #FreeSurvivors: Make Art for Abolition

April 6, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Survived & Punished NY invites you to an online event to get our creative juices flowing and make artwork to amplify our message to Governor Cuomo: #FreeSurvivors #FreeThemAll.  We demand that Governor Cuomo use his unlimited clemency powers to free incarcerated survivors of gender-based violence. While our campaign began in 2018, the current coronavirus pandemic has made their immediate release an urgent matter of life and death.  Cuomo said that he would consider using his power of clemency to release people from prisons during this crisis, but so far no one has been released. This isn’t the first time Cuomo has committed to freeing people with clemency and failed to follow through. Let’s work together to ensure that this time, Cuomo gets the message loud and clear: #FreeSurvivors #FreeThemAll

In this virtual event, we’ll learn about the status of criminalized survivors in NYS prisons–in general and in this moment–and how you can support their freedom. We’ll highlight the Governor’s broad clemency powers and how he can free survivors through mass commutations in this moment of heightened risk and always. Then we’ll transform our demand into beautiful works of art that we’ll use to put the pressure on Cuomo to act now.

Not an artist? Don’t worry! We’ll have several pieces of art pre-made that you can copy/use as inspiration, and we need your voice/presence regardless.
