Tewkunzi Green is a Black mother from Peoria, Illinois. In 2007, she killed her abusive boyfriend while defending herself and protecting her infant child. At trial, she argued that she acted in self-defense but was found guilty and sentenced to 34 years.
Efforts are now underway to file a clemency petition on behalf of Tewkunzi in January 2017. At that time, she will have been in prison for 10 years.
