Join MUAVI and Love & Protect for an interactive virtual teach-in on the criminalization of survivors of gender-based violence.

The Prison Is Gender Violence, Free All Surivors! Teach-In will take place on Wednesday, July 1, from 6 to 7:45 p.m. CST via Zoom.

Registration Info: Registration is required. There are a limited number of slots, so please only register if you are certain you can attend. This will be an interactive event, not a passive viewing experience.

Registration will close on Wednesday, July 1, at 1 p.m. CST. All registrants will receive a Zoom link via email by 5 p.m. CST on Wednesday, July 1, they can use to join the teach-in.

What we will do: We will cover how prison is gender violence, specifically how prisons replicate the dynamics of abusive relationships. We will review case studies of criminalized domestic violence survivors and actions we can take now to demand the release of survivors currenlty incarcerated in Illinois. We also will examine the futility and harm of relying on the criminal legal system to end gender violence and discuss abolitionist responses to gender violence.

Shout outs: This Teach-In will be facilitated by members of MUAVI and Love & Protect as part of the Illinois Coalition for Higher Education in Prison’s (IL-CHEP) Summer of Action, with support from McCormick Theological Seminary’s Solidarity Buildling Initiative.
